Climate Organizer Position with Youth on Board

 

Youth on Board, a leader in the field of youth activism in Boston and beyond for over 20 years, seeks an enthusiastic and driven individual who is experienced with youth organizing and is interested in environmental justice to join our team as a Climate Organizer. This position is fast-paced, varied, and exciting. Our ideal candidate will understand climate justice through a racial equity lens and have a strong interest in social activism, youth organizing, and coalition-building. The successful candidate must have strong writing and communication skills and be willing to work with the Youth on Board team on a variety of projects, both climate-related and not.

The Boston Student Advisory Council (BSAC) is a group of high school students from across the Boston Public School system that is co-administered by Youth on Board in partnership with the Boston Public Schools. The Climate Organizer will work closely with BSAC’s Climate Team.

 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

As the Climate Organizer, you will work with colleagues and high school student leaders to engage on multiple climate-related projects and campaigns. You will be engaging, purposeful
and deliberative in your interactions with others, building trust and buy-in with a wide range of
individuals including Boston Public Schools administrators and teachers, community-based organizations, coalitions such as Green Justice Coalition, City and State policymakers, and national grassroots campaigns. 

 

Working with our small but dedicated staff, the Climate Organizer is an integral part of the climate justice work, reporting directly to the Director of Youth on Board. The Climate Organizer will represent YOB at meetings and events, and ensure projects are successfully implemented by facilitating partnerships, planning events and actions, tracking progress toward goals, and becoming an expert in the field. You’ll be immersed in the Boston climate organizing scene and ensure that young people of color and low-income youth are at the center of the movement. The position will be responsible for written materials for the climate justice work, including grant reports and proposals, email correspondence, position papers, and social media. It is also responsible for day to day support of our youth network, ensuring they attend meetings, are present at hearings, etc.

 

While environmental issues are the cornerstone of this position, active engagement in other Youth on Board projects is expected. 


Qualification:

 

We’re looking for someone who shares our values -

  • Committed to ensuring access of information about climate change and environmental justice; for all, especially historically marginalized communities who will be most impacted by climate change, and

  • A team player who brings a positive attitude and flexible approach, and who is comfortable navigating a variety and diversity of personalities and work styles and appreciation for the position.

 
And can get the job done - 

  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, as well as a high level of comfort using Google tools such as Gmail, Google Shared Drive, and Calendar

  • Operates well in an organizational culture that is fast-paced, and requires juggling multiple campaigns, projects and deadlines;

  • Understand climate change and environmental justice terms, themes, and trends;

  • Excellent people skills, both with youth and adults;

  • Very strong writing skills;

  • Strong communicator via email and phone;

  • Takes initiative;

  • Able to work and conduct research independently, and

  • Works well in a team

     

Preference is for a full-time candidate, however, hiring the right person is key.  We are willing to discuss ¾ time and flexible schedules with qualified candidates.

 

The position requires attending regular evening and some weekend meetings.

 

At least 5 years experience in organizing, youth leadership and management
